Profile
Gaining its independence from the Engineering department in 1993, the Institute of Marine Studies (IMS) began with a humble figure of less than a hundred students. But its student population would eventually grow to surpass that of any other maritime schools in the province, as it does so today. Aside from the mock bridge, which never fails to catch attention from passersby at the Banyuhay bridge, the institute has a boiler room, mechanical and simulation laboratories. All of these are inspected annually to satisfy the standards of CHED's Technical Panel on Maritime Education and the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
Present coordinator Christopher Perez is the only head of a maritime school in Southern Tagalog (except Batangas) who took the recent IMO Model Course 6.09, a program designed to make institute curricula more relevant and responsive to emerging trends and requirements of the global maritime scenario. IMS offers the Bachelor in Science of Marine Transportation and Bachelor in Science of Marine Engineering programs, as well as a three-year associate course and two-year certificate course for both courses. Also available are one-year programs, which include Seafarer's Deck Rating Certificate, Seafarer's Engine Rating Certificate, and the Seafarer's Catering-Steward Certificate.
