HISTORY OF THE COLLEGE OF ARCHITECTURE AND FINE ARTS
The diversification of courses in the Institute of Technology and the desire to strengthen curricular programs in the mid-‘80s led to the creation of a separate and distinct College of Architecture and Fine Arts. The Bachelor of Science in Architecture program started with ten students in 1962. The department attained government recognition five years later on June 3, 1967. Aside from the five-year program, the department also offered a two-year program in architectural drafting. The programs in the school of Architecture started attracting many students after it established its tract record in the licensure examination Former dean, Mercedita Quejano, was the first licensed architect-alumna. Among its faculty-pioneers where Arch. Marceliano Goyma Rachel Militante, Belen Conjares, Edgardo Oliveros, Argeo Hernanadez and draftsman Cesario Lafuente. Arch. Goyma and Mr. Lafuente supervised the construction of the gymnasium in the late ‘60s. In the call for a more responsive architecture education in the country twenty-seven universities, including MSEUF, join the tripartite agreement dated February 14,1979 among the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports, The Ministry of Human Settlements and the United Architects of the Philippines to adopt a five-year ladderized curriculum. This was implemented beginning the 1990-1981 academic year, where students received an architectural draftsman certificate after completion of two-years, a building construction technician certificate after completion of the third year, and a diploma in architecture after completion of the five-year course.
Today, the College of Architecture and Fine Arts is one of the few architecture schools with a full faculty complement of licensed practicing architects. This accounts for a high passing percentage in the licensure examination, which for the past three years ranged from 35% to 66%(national passing rate) as of January 2000. In recognition of its record in the licensure examination, the University administration contines to introduce innovations in its myriad facilities. In 1990, the Board of Trustees authorized the construction of a new two–storey Architecture Bilding which features a state-of-the-art drawing and design laboratory behind the Administration Building. To date, the college has produced thirty-nine licensed architects who compete for projects with their peers and whose names are often emblazoned in construction sites in Quezon Province, Manila and environs. Today, the College of Architecture under the leadership of Dean Benedicto M. Tan has one of the fastest growing programs in the university, which now includes Bachelor of Fine Arts major in Advertising.
